Process Engineer for Biocatalytic Process Development

Oxford Biotrans is a start-up company pioneering the commercialization of biocatalytic processes for the production of high value specialty chemicals. The company seeks to appoint a process engineer to undertake enzymatic process development activities.

The Role

Based at our R&D facilities in the Oxford area, the role will involve hands-on process R&D. You will be defining and executing bench-scale studies for fundamental characterisation of enzymes/enzymatic reactions, developing models based on these data and using these to devise and evaluate process options. The role may, over time, entail supervision of junior scientists.

You will need to form a close liaison with others in our team responsible for (i) design and screening of new mutant enzymes for new bioconversions and (ii) further development and scale-up of the processes for transfer to pilot plant and beyond. It is also likely that you will play a role in supporting the latter group in implementing processes at pilot- and commercial scale in then plant.

Typical for all start-up companies, there may be a variety of other tasks outside the main role specification that the jobholder may need to undertake at the request of the company to help move this early-stage business forward. For an outstanding performer there would be the opportunity to grow/shape the role as the company develops.

The Person

  • Chemical engineer with qualification in appropriate technical area (PhD or other secondary qualification or equivalent experience)
  • Experience in reaction- and process-engineering for (cell-free) biocatalytic process development as described above
  • Demonstrated analytical/mathematical capability and experience in process simulation and modelling
  • Any hands-on experience of (i) immobilisation of enzymes and/or (ii) downstream processing of microbial biomass would also be advantageous
  • Good organizational skills and some experience in supervising junior scientists preferred
  • Ambitious and keen to develop a career in industrial biotechnology
  • Self-starter who can quickly take the initiative in problem solving
  • Professional, mature, confident and a good team-worker
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English language)

Bioprocessing Engineer – downstream

Oxford Biotrans is a start-up company pioneering the commercialization of biocatalytic processes for the production of high value specialty chemicals. The company seeks to appoint an engineer, based at our laboratory facilities in the Oxford area, with several years hands-on experience of downstream process development for fermentation processes.

The Role

As a part of our fermentation team, the jobholder will take a lead in defining and conducting the lab and plant work necessary to develop, optimise and scale up the associated downstream processing.

The work will involve hands-on evaluation of process options and development/optimisation of processes in the laboratory and transfer of lab-scale processes to pilot plant and beyond. The role may entail supervision of junior scientists and will certainly require a close liaison with others within the team responsible for development and scale-up of the fermentation process. The role will require some travel to research/manufacturing sites in the UK and overseas.

Typical for all start-up companies, there may be a variety of other tasks outside the main role specification that the jobholder may need to undertake at the request of the company to help move this early-stage business forward. For an outstanding performer there should be the opportunity to shape the role as the company develops.

The Person

  • Engineer with qualification in appropriate technical area, probably (bio)chemical engineering or bioprocess engineering
  • Essential to have several years hands-on industrial experience in development of downstream processing of microbial biomass for recovery of recombinant proteins as cell-free extract and transfer of these processes to plant scale
  • Hands-on experience with DSP unit operations such as homogenization, flocculation, centrifugation and a range of filtration approaches as plant scale
  • Experience of some or all of the following would also be seen as an advantage:
    • DSP for recovery of recombinant proteins from a variety of microorganisms
    • Regulatory requirements for production of food-grade enzymes
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ambitious and keen to develop/continue a career in industrial biotechnology
  • Self-starter who can quickly take the initiative in problem solving
  • Professional and confident, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English language)

(Senior) Scientist: Enzyme design and screening

Oxford Biotrans is a start-up company pioneering the commercialization of biocatalytic processes for the production of high value specialty chemicals. The company seeks to appoint an experienced scientist to take a lead in the design and screening of new cytochrome P450 enzymes.

The Role

Based at our new facilities in the Oxford area, the jobholder will have a keen interest to define and lead programmes of R&D that will target specific biotransformations. The role will involve hands-on design, evolution and screening of enzymes. The role will entail supervision of junior scientists and require a close liaison with others responsible for process development based upon your work.

Typical for all start-up companies, there may be a variety of other tasks outside the main role specification that the jobholder may need to undertake at the request of the company to help move this early-stage business forward. For an outstanding performer there would be the opportunity to shape the role as the company develops.

The Person

  • Scientist with qualification (PhD) in appropriate technical area, probably biochemistry and several years’ post-doctoral experience
  • Experience in:
    • Design and evolution of mutant enzymes with improved performance in the target biotransformations
      • Functional expression of enzyme families and classes
      • Application of rational protein engineering, directed evolution, synthetic metagenomics and other approaches for enzyme redesign with the goal of improving expression, solubility, activity, substrate specificity and product profile
      • Deep understanding of protein library design and statistical analysis of experimental data
      • Knowledge of enzyme mechanisms and chemistry of metabolic pathways
      • Some experience or awareness of appropriate molecular modelling/bioinformatics tools and machine learning approaches would also be desirable.
    • Screening of enzymes for (cell-free and whole-cell) biotransformation of organic substrates
      • A good understanding of the structure/function relationships of enzymes (esp. P450s) and enzyme kinetics
    • Specific experience with P450s would be a strong advantage
    • Appropriate knowledge of/skills in molecular biology sufficient at least for manipulation, transformation and expression of mutants for screening purposes
    • Design and implementation of biochemical assays for screening performance:
      • Application of DOE methods to reduce assay variability and increase reproducibility
      • Experience of in vitro and in vivo enzyme assay development and characterization of enzyme kinetics
    • Experience with techniques for analysis, isolation and characterisation of organic compounds (such as GC, HPLC, GC-MS, HPLC-MS, NMR) would be desirable
    • Good organizational skills and experience in supervising (a team of) junior scientists
    • Ability to develop experimental work-programmes to address business objectives
    • Ambitious and keen to develop a career in industrial biotechnology
    • Self-starter who can quickly take the initiative in problem solving
